• About Us •
The Pankonin name is entering its 6th generation of farming operations. With each there has been expansion and new dimensions added. We are essentially beginning the 3rd generation of cattle finishing and to continue to scale up capacity. With each new generation there also seems to be another dimension with the most recent being ranching operations in eastern Montana.
With change comes growth, and we're committed to both. We're looking forward to the future, the waves of change, and the adoption of new technologies to become more and more sustainable. What will never change is our unwavering commitment to produce the best beef for our consumers.
Our mission is to continue the legacy of the family name. This requires proper upbringing of the next generation. A solid work ethic (developed early in life), proper development of the skills needed to succeed on any career path, and the honesty, integrity and accountability to sustain their path.
Our Sustainability Chain

Step 1

•Pankonin Farms •
Pankonin Farms is a vital piece of our sustainable operation and requires us to be responsible with the way we use the land. The tillable farming operation is really where it all starts. A good land base is essential to generational sustainability. The land is an asset that is developed and nurtured to achieve its greatest potential, in a fashion similar to raising a family.
The land is farmed to produce corn and hay to feed the livestock, and provide bedding to keep livestock dry and comfortable. Soybeans are a cash crop and a rotational crop to keep the soil in good health and productivity. The land also provides an environmentally responsible outlet for the manure waste generated by the livestock. Through decades and multiple generations of farming this land, improvements have been made. The marginal or sensitive land has been restored to grassland and trees to filter the air and water, as well as to provide wildlife habitat. The more productive soils has been cleared, plowed and drained to produce food, feed, and fuel for the ever-expanding population of the planet.
Step 2
• Minnesota Supreme + Double Diamond •
Are just simple yet meaningful names for our cattle feeding operations. These enterprises add another dimension to the operation, but are truly much more than that. For my dad, myself and my oldest daughter it is where our passion lives. Yes, it does compliment very nicely to the farming side. We become the end user of all annual corn and hay production. The manure generated by the cattle is returned back to the land thus eliminating the need and cost of all commercial fertilizers with the only exception being the need for supplemental nitrogen. The cattle also help to solidify the capital requirement needed to engage and expand into today's inflationary farming environment. This part of the labor force is the toughest to fill. It is the least glamorous, longest hours, and most unpredictable of all other job descriptions. These people are truly gifted and dedicated to the cattle under their watch. Regardless of what business you are in, at the end of the day it is the people business and there are some great people in the cattle business!

Step 3
• Century Ranch •
Our newest endeavor is Century Ranch, located in southeastern Montana, near Hammond. We are in the process of converting the property from a stocker pasture to a cow/calf operation in full. The transition will be slow and hopefully smooth. Hay land needs to be turned over and reseeded for better winter feed supply, and water lines and fence lines need to be updated to offer a better rotational grazing program. Equally as important, Bailey is still young and developing her management skills so she can be in a position to succeed when the ranch is fully transitioned.

Step 4

• Dry Creek Trucking •
The trucking basically brings everything full circle. About 75% of what we haul is internal freight generated by the grain, hay, and livestock operations. Although we strongly value our expanding customer base this company would not be sustainable without the need to service the home yards.
Dry Creek Trucking started in 1992 with one truck and one bull rack and has evolved into 5 over-the-road trucks pulling bull racks and step decks, as well as 5 day-cabs pulling belt trailers and end-dumps. Reliable transportation of all commodities (especially the livestock) is essential from farm or ranch to market. I often ask myself which is the lesser of two evils, booking trucks or dispatching trucks? I have still not figured out the answer so for now we'll keep on truckin'.
